Staying Active & Safe: A Winter Guide for Seniors Using Tricycles and Mobility Scooters

As the colder months settle in, staying mobile can become more challenging—especially for seniors who depend on tricycles or mobility scooters for independence. At Richmond eBike, we’re committed to helping every rider stay safe, comfortable, and confident year-round. Whether you ride a traditional trike, an electric tricycle, or a mobility scooter, this winter checklist will keep your equipment performing at its best.

We proudly service all brands and models—even if you didn’t purchase your unit from us.

Why Seniors Love Tricycles and Mobility Scooters

Tricycles and mobility scooters provide stability, comfort, and freedom for daily errands or fresh-air exercise. They’re ideal for seniors because:

  • Three-wheel stability reduces the risk of tipping.

  • Comfort-oriented seats make longer rides easier.

  • Electric assistance helps tackle small hills and longer distances.

  • Cargo baskets make shopping and personal errands stress-free.

For many riders, these vehicles are more than transportation—they’re a key to staying active, social, and independent.

❄️ Cold Weather Tips: Keep Your Ride Safe This Winter

Winter can cause mechanical changes in bikes and scooters. Here’s what every senior rider should check:

1. Tire Pressure Drops in Cold Weather

Cold temperatures reduce air pressure, which can make your trike or scooter feel heavy or unstable.

✔ Check tire pressure every 1–2 weeks
✔ Inflate to the recommended PSI
✔ Avoid riding on fully flat or soft tires — this can damage rims

If you’re unsure, just bring it in—we can check your tires for free.

2. Battery Care During Cold Weather

Batteries don’t perform as well in low temperatures, so a little extra care goes a long way.

  • Keep your bike or scooter indoors when you’re not riding, ideally in a warm, dry place.

  • Avoid storing it outdoors under harsh conditions like rain, snow, or freezing wind.

  • Expect a shorter travel range on very cold days—this is normal for all lithium batteries.

  • If you notice clicking sounds, flashing lights, or the scooter feeling weak, the battery may be cold or needing inspection.

We can check battery health anytime and recommend the best care for winter riding.

3. Squeaking or Grinding Noises From Brakes

Cold weather stiffens cables and reduces lubrication, which commonly causes squeaking.

Common causes:

  • Dry brake pads

  • Dirt or moisture buildup

  • Misalignment after bumps or curb drops

If you hear squeaks, rubbing, or grinding, schedule a quick service—most fixes take only a few minutes.

4. Check Bolts, Seats, and Baskets

Cold weather can shrink metal slightly, causing:

  • Loose baskets

  • Wobbling seats

  • Rattling fenders

  • Handlebar movement

A quick safety check can prevent bigger problems later.
